What is SEO anyway?
A lot of practitioners conflate SEO “search engine optimization” with a lot of similar peripheral concepts like SEM, analytics, and display advertising. SEO is an often overused buzzword.
SEO is a collection of strategic and technical concerns intended to make your site more consumable (readable) by search engines, like Google, in order to provide more favorable natural search results.
There are many search providers in the industry. Google is far and above the market leader. If you don’t pay attention to Google, your site may not be found.

Glossary of Terminology
SEO “search engine optimization” – The practice of building your website in a manner that favors natural (unpaid) search results.
SEM “search engine marketing” – The practice of using paid search engine results to drive traffic to your site.
Web Analytics – The act of measuring your audience. There are many companies who provide analytics, the most common and economical is Google Analytics.
SERP “search engine results page” – Industry term for how your page presents; it’s appearance and position in search engine results.
Conversion – When a visitor does something you have predefined as a goal. This could be click a link, buy a product or fill out a form.
Content Marketing – The act of using unique written content to position company branding and drive conversions.
CTA “call to action” – An object on the page, usually a link or button, prompting the user to take some action. They are all over the web. Learn more. Buy now.
Location marketing – The act of optimizing your presence with Google Business Pages formerly “Google my Business” and other location based services like Yelp.
